The Best Hair Care Advice

Clear Out Your Old Hair Care Products
Being honest, most of us are guilty of holding onto a collection of half used hair and beauty products! It’s important to check the expiry dates on your packaging and ditch any that are out of date.
Out of date products can cause skin irritation, and in some cases burning and itching. Hair products which are past their expiry date also won’t perform as well as they used to. It is important to keep an eye on cream or liquid based products that are out of date, they can become lumpy or too runny. Hair sprays and other spray products are less likely to deteriorate and become contaminated.
The average life span of most unopened professional haircare is approximately three years. Once opened, the lifespan is about 12 to 18 months or sometimes 24 months, although this depends upon the brands that you use. If anything opened is now out of date, now is a good time to have a clear out. If you have anything unwanted that is still sealed, a local charity may be glad to receive it.
Now you’ve got space, it’s a great opportunity to restock with fresh supplies of your favourite products, or find something new. If you need some advice or inspiration, pop into our Loughborough salon and we’ll be happy to advise you.
Deep Clean Your Brushes
We know that dirty make-up brushes can harbour germs and cause issues with our skin, but we often don’t realise that the same goes for our hair brushes. Clumps of hair, dead skin cells, hair products and oil can all build up in the bristles of your hairbrush, creating the ideal environment for bacteria to thrive.
You don’t want to be blow drying dirt and bacteria into your freshly washed hair, so it is essential to regularly wash your brushes – not just for Spring.
We recommend removing built-up hair every week followed by a deep cleaning shampoo on your brush. If you use a wooden or paddle brush, you should check the manufacturers guidelines on cleaning, as water can get trapped inside and may result in damaging the brush. A quick swish should be enough to keep it clean.
Spring Clean Your Styling Tools
If you use your electrical styling tools on a regular basis, they can suffer from the same build up of dirt, products, grease and germs as your brushes. Curlers, straighteners and wands should be cleaned regularly, as many also get covered in styling products such as serums, sprays and oils.
To clean your styling tools, first make sure they are unplugged and never submerge them in water. A damp soft cloth or baby wipe should be sufficient to clean the styling plates although, if this isn’t working, you could try using some rubbing alcohol. Never use a scourer on them as this will damage the plates and surfaces. Be sure to dry your styling tool completely before plugging in and using it.
An often over-looked area of dust and dirt build up is the filter on the back of your hairdryer. This can affect how well, and how safely, your hairdryer operates in the long run, so it should be cleaned regularly. Check your manufacturer’s instructions first and make sure your dryer is unplugged, then you should be able to twist off the filter on the back, or on some models, unclip it. Simply wipe with a warm, damp (not wet) hand towel to remove the dust, lint and other build up, then dry thoroughly.
Invest in New Bedding
No matter how soundly you sleep, you spend hours each night with your hair – and face – scrunched against your pillow. The friction against your cotton pillowcase can cause an interesting bed head the next morning that’s nearly impossible to style, frizzy and damaged. To prevent this, we’d recommend investing in a silk pillowcase if possible. Dermatologists say that sleeping on a silky surface will make your skin less prone to wrinkles too, so it’s definitely worth a try!
Failing that, simply make sure you wash and change your pillowcase regularly to avoid transferring dirt and bacteria build up onto your hair and skin.
Use Seasonally Appropriate Hair Care Products
We regularly adapt our skin care routine as the seasons change, adding SPF or a heavier moisturiser as necessary, but did you know that the same goes for your hair?
As the weather brightens up during the warmer months, your hair colour may start to fade in the sun, so you’ll need to protect it from the UV rays with an SPF spray. It would also benefit from a deep conditioning treatment in our Loughborough salon. You may find your scalp and hair get greasier in hot, humid weather so you’ll need to adjust your home hair care products.
If you aren’t sure which products are right for you, speak to your Smith and Smith stylist and we’ll be happy to recommend the right ones from our range of Paul Mitchell hair care products.
Boost your Hair From Within
Your products, brushes and the way you treat your hair are all vitally important but to really get the best out of your locks, you need to look further. The condition of your hair is a reflection of your overall health and vitality, so it’s important to maintain a healthy diet to keep it at its best.
By following a healthy, balanced eating plan packed with proteins and vitamins, you can achieve hair that is stronger, shinier and thicker. Foods including omega 3 help to nourish your hair to encourage growth and shine.
